Unfinished Floor Installation

Unfinished floors are boards of plain wood that can be put together like a puzzle. A small grove in the side of the board allows the next board to fit tightly together. Nails or staples are used to fasten the boards together. After the entire floor has been installed it needs to be sanded and finished. Here are some tips for installing a hardwood floor:

Begin with the focal point of the room, such as a fireplace, when determining where to begin an installation. Laying decorative borders before the rest of the floor assures that the final installation will be symmetrical.

Snap a chalk line to use as a reference point, before laying the first board.
Aligning the first row of boards with the chalk line assures that all subsequent rows will be straight.

Boards are often delivered in various lengths. Before securing the remaining boards to the subfloor, test fit the boards in sections. As a rule of thumb, joints should be at least 12 inches apart. Test fitting the boards allows you to make sure that all of the points are staggered.

Blind nailing tongue-and-groove boards hides the fasteners. Each fastener is driven through a board's tongue, and covered by the next adjacent board. Nails are driven through the top of the board through a process called face nailing. Boards can also be glued down. The most common type of floors that is glued down is parquet floor.

Baseboards and Quarter Rounds

When installing new wood flooring in an older home, baseshoe or quarter round molding must be removed prior to installation of the flooring.
